After months of absence, I finally decided today is a good day to make a move. Tried to log in at My Opera (probably for the one last time) and was confronted by the “Change username” page. After all years of resisting, I had to change my MyOpera username from mimi_s_mum to mimi-s-mum, so that I could export and save the blog. Didn’t care much about my posts but the comments from my friends were important for me.
Exporting went otherwise smoothly and I have imported it into the “legacy” blog I created separately. I knew all the links would be dead, so posts (136 of them!!) would have no pictures. But seeing my own comments appear as by “mimi-s-mum” rather than “mimi_s_mum” makes me rather sad. The “legacy” blog is supposed to be invite-only but somehow the posts are publicly visible. :rolleyes:
PS: I’m still mimi_s_mum on Twitter. So a certain level of normality is retained.
:coffee:
PPS: Decided there’s no point keeping the “legacy” invite-only. If you really want to see it with no picture and all, it’s at http://hardlifelegacy.wordpress.com/
:more coffee:
PPPS: Now I realise I needed to fix the dead links before exporting to get the pictures at least in the posts. Will have to re-export and re-import. That’s why my life is hard …
Update: Finished fixing deadlinks on MyOpera end. But the xml file cannot be generated so soon after the first one. Apparently have to wait at least 24 hours. Bugger! Meanwhile I’ve deleted the first import on WP legacy side. Being me is sooo hard!
Update 2: Re-exporting from MyOpera successful at second attempt. Also emptied “Trash” for the legacy blog to rid of the broken no-picture posts, which took several attempts and error messages. Still the objective achieved. Feeling a little better. (I should put this in “comment”, I guess)
Update 3: Started mirroring my MyOpera site some 4 hours ago. 343MB saved and still going! :eyes: Also started to re-import the original “Hard Life” blog, and, just received the notification mail saying it’s finished. Excitement!!
Update 4: Re-import successful!! Still don’t like the theme. But at least there’s no pressure in terms of deadline. Meanwhile the mirroring is still going. 4.55 hrs 380MB!
Update 5 (22 March, 2020): Legacy site moved

Break out the rum, lads! MM’s back!
Too early to get excited, dW. I’m yet to save the blog or albums properly. Oh the pressure! :faint:
Well, I’m on WP, for reasons I’ve set forth elsewhere, and I’ve got my damned files. My XML gave me no difficulty, but I have yet to figure the ZIP … I don’t know exactly what’s in it, and I don’t know how to bring it here, so it’s sitting in my pooter.
Update day-3: Re-exporting from MyOpera successful at second attempt. Also emptied “Trash” for the legacy blog to rid of the broken no-picture posts, which took several attempts and error messages. Still the objective achieved. Feeling a little better.
Nice to see you posting here. π Just a few days ago I finally got around to exporting my blog and files, but I haven’t done anything with them. I just assumed that if I wanted to upload my old blog here at WordPress, it would go smoothly. But after reading about the multiple efforts you made, I’m almost too tired to try.
Good to see you, Deb! :hug:
Iβm sure your migration will go smoothly. My problem was
caused by of having to change the username. Your handle has no underscores, so sheβll be sweet!
Good to hear!
Right now I’m mirroring my MyOpera site using HTTrack. Will take a few hours. So posting this from mobile to keep the connection clear for the op. With luck I shall keep the whole thing! π
@dW
The ZIP file has all uploaded images, generated thumbnails, the files you saved and customisation files such as your header and CSS. All the pictures you uploaded to your albums should be there but no album comments. (That’s why I’m running HTTrack to get everything including the album comments.)
Guys! I had the WP default of comment nesting on but don’t like each reply getting shorter. With nesting it seems just one-on-one talk happening and group discussions like the ones back at my MyOpera blog aren’t likely to happen. So I’ve turned nesting off. You’d better start remembering your old MyOpera comment manners. π
333MB saved and still going. :eyes:
The demise of My Opera has left me somewhat rudderless. π
I tend to Facebook a lot now where I never had any interest in Facebook at all before!.
Hi Aadil! Great to see you here. :D. This is more like it. :yes:
Yes. I miss MyOpera dearly. I almost didn’t export the old blog. Felt there was little point. I’m glad I changed mind and saved it.
I don’t do FB. Is that a good reason for you to do less of FB & hang out here? π
It’s almost midnight here, so I’ll go off line. Have fun & don’t break anything. :p

I just haven’t been in the mood to blog. And I’d have to reset my password here to blog here as it seems they ‘lose’ my password every time I need to log in. π
π WP and I get along OK, at least so far. I’ve always had problem with Yahoo though. Recently Y! let me log in but refuse me entering the webmail. I can get to my Flickr and even the account settings page and read mail on client. but webmail is out of bounds. Go figure. :rolleyes:
I hadn’t blogged, or even visited any of my blog sites for three months (until three days ago). The summer hasn’t been that great, the vege patch not producing, some neighbour trouble I will not elaborate any more, etcetera, etcetera. Certainly there weren’t many blogging material.
Better go and get some work done. Also I need to start mirroring my shoot and tell album. (Site-mirroring went OK if not perfect. I got what I want: my-opera-com/mimi-s-mum/ site on my SSD ;))
OK, MM … I found this:
http://www.ipernity.com/group/shoottell
from Elina.
As a visual person, with only a passing interest in writing, I MUCH prefer WP … my pictures are reasonably big, here, and with a click, you can see them about as big as I posted them (I resize everything to pretty much fit my screen and my email form. I use Outlook Express [yeah, I know it’s obsolete. I like it anyway. So sue me.] made up about to fit my 19″ screen, so the pics are VISIBLE!
Ipernity shows them only about as big as the MyOpera columns, and you can’t make ’em bigger … full stop. They have a nice little Β© protection in them, but WTF? I’ve never known anyone to steal my stuff yet. But the company’s good at Ipernity, no two ways about that.
And Vivaldi is, at best, a work in progress. I’m waiting, but I’m not holding my breath.
@dW
Yes. I know about the new S&T site. I took a quick look. It is a very nice photo hosting site and the group seems doing great. But I was rather disappointed they made a new rule one can only post two pictures a day. Although they still say they are big on the story side of S&T, the way I see it is the two per day restriction will not favour someone like me. The new rule would be the deal breaker for me had I decided to carry on with the group.
I’m experimenting how I can present my pics in a photo story, which what I really wanted to do at the old S&T. (See the new post today.) When you upload pictures, WP gives each a nice pig own page, just like MyOpera does/did. I can probably increase the photo/thumbnail size to be inserted at blog. But you can always click on a pic to get to the media page, at least on album 12119192 π
Guys! I’m pleased to announce I have saved what I want as much as I can, including my S&T album. As I mentioned in earlier update, my old blog, “Hard Life” is imported to WP and republished as “Hard Life at My Opera” at hardlifelegacy.wordpress.com . You are welcome to visit, especially after the real shut-down on 3 March. And please also have a look at the latest post at top of this blog. Cheers :cheers:
@Deb
If you haven’t imported your MyOpera blog to WP. You might want to do it before the shutdown. From my experience not having pictures in my first attempt because of the username change and broken links, I think you will also have no MyO hosted pictures if you wait the import after MyO shutdown. Of course you can re-upload your original image files one by one. But do you want to? I somehow don’t think so. π
